Tortola is the largest island in the British Virgin Islands and the islands are of volcanic origin, with the exception of Anegada, which is the second largest island in the territory and comprised of coral and limestone. The highest point in the British Virgin Islands is Sage Mountain (521 m) located on the island of Tortola. The earliest settlers in the BVI’s were Amerindians. The territory was colonized by the Dutch in 1666 and then annexed by the British in 1672.
